Slowly but surely..
My work on my project is slowly falling behind, but we're getting there surely. The deadline for this piece was much too small considering the size of the background, the detail and consistency I want to maintain, and the fact that we have other assignments with closer due dates than I expected. There are so many more assignments in other classes than what I expected, so I've been putting this piece on the back burner.
Instead of sticking to a 3 week schedule, I will decide on a comfortable due date piece by piece. To get this one done to the standard that I would like, I am going to keep this piece going until the end of the Easter holidays.
I'm embarrassed that I haven't been able to stick to my schedule, but I have underestimated the time I need to take for a piece this size.
In other news, progress on the creatures is going well! I have the mane left to darken and then I need to put in the highlights. I've decided to do all of the highlights right at the end to keep them linear and consistent. I will move onto the trees next. c:

Colour Rough!
This week I have done a colour rough in preparation for when I truly get started! I wanted to put in some dramatic lighting to create more of an atmosphere to the piece and here we are.
I still haven't completely finished the lines, but there are only tufts of grass left so I decided to save my sanity and begin throwing in the flat colours.
It's moving and I can see a great piece coming out of this in the end which is exciting!

First piece beginnings!

The first thing I did when I started work on my project was make a big list of themes I could pick from. I will most likely continue to add to it as the year goes on as I think of them. This is just a good reference store so that I don't have to hum and hah too much when it comes to the time to choose another. c:I want to work on backgrounds a lot this year because I'm always very character focused, so writing down a bunch of terrains that I can mix with other themes is helpful. I chose a lot of different character tropes and types and also emotions so I can choose from either to come up with characters. I would also like to maybe do a few book covers or try my hand at depicting book characters so I might do that a little later! There is really no complete plan when it comes to the choosing of the theme or character.
The first theme I chose to do is 'bruiser with a soft centre", so I did an initial sketch of a creature that came to mind and tried a few different poses that would suit this theme. I also decided to put in another small creature to show the bruiser's soft heart. In the end I decided to go with the sleeping scene. The bruiser has noticed that the little creature is snuggling up close to him, but rather than getting angry and attacking him he's just letting the little guy be.
I took my rough sketch into photoshop and sketched back over it. I changed the pose of the creature to make it more snuggly and also the bruiser's back legs to make them look more understandable. I decided to put them into a forest setting.
I have now begun the lines but they are currently unfinished! I will post again when they are complete! c:
